Glenshee Mountain Refuge

Glenshee Mountain Refuge. Glenshee Shelter in the Mountains. We found this Mountain Shelter on the upper slopes of Glenshee, just South of Braemar in the Cairngorms National Park. The weather was great the day we were there but it can change quickly in these parts and I am sure it would be a welcome refuge on a bad day in the Highlands of Scotland. The Devils Point from Ben Macdui

The Devils Point from Ben Macdui.

Dwarfed by its munro neighbours, the Devils Point still exceeds 1000 metres. We climbed the mountain whilst staying in superb luxury accommodation in Aviemore at Creag Mhor cottage.

The Angels Peak from Sron Riach

The Angels Peak from Sron Riach.

The Angels Peak taken from Sron Riach a 'top' of Ben Macdui. The whole ridge from Braeriach over the Angels Peak and Cairn Toul to the Devils point is a superb high level ridge walk. When tackled from Aviemore, it would be better to spend a night at the less than luxury accommodation of Corrour Bothy!

Summit Cairn Ben Macdui

Summit Cairn Ben Macdui.

A blowy day at the summit cairn of Ben Macdui. From the Aviemore side the walk is shorter - approximately 16 kilometres, taking around 6 hours.

We had a wonderful weekend staying at Creag Mhor Cottage. The accommodation is superb and a real bargain.

Snowfield in July on Ben Macdui

Snowfield in July on Ben Macdui.

Hard to believe that there is still snow in the Cairngorms in July. The skiers had a great season last winter and the snow still won't go away. Aviemore was chock a block with skiers - it's just as well there's a great choice of accommodation from luxury lodges through to bunkhouse accommodation.

This snowfield is on the East slopes of Ben Macdui, the second highest mountain in Scotland and indeed Great Britain.

Snowfield feeding Gharbh Uisge Mor

Snowfield feeding Gharbh Uisge Mor.

The snowfield feeding Gharbh Uisge Mor burn which careers over the Shelter Stone crags. The shelter stone is well known for providing comfy accommodation for the night! There are even friendly mice to keep you company! I think I'll stick to my cosy cottage in Aviemore!

Sgor Gaoith and Sgoran Dubh Mor

Sgor Gaoith and Sgoran Dubh Mor.

Sgor Gaoith is one of the munros known affectionately as the Feshies. Sgoran Dubh Mor is a 'top' of this mountain.

When we climbed the Feshies, we stayed in the luxury accommodation afforded by the Mountain Bothies Association at Ruigh Aiteachain. We had one of the best fires of all time using the dead Scots Pine. i actually went to sleep in our cosy little cottage with one eye open watching the fire dancing up the chimney! Unforgettable!

Sgor an Lochain Uaine and Braeriach

Sgor an Lochain Uaine and Braeriach.

Sgor an Lochain Uaine is also known with affection as the Angels Peak. It certainly doesn't disappoint. We climbed the North East ridge providing superb scrambling before heading over Braeriach and back down to Aviemore for a welcome pint in the Cairngorm Hotel.

Sgor an Lochain Uaine

Sgor an Lochain Uaine.

Sgor an Lochain Uaine or the Angels Peak at 1258 metres is the 5th highest mountain in Scotland. A beautiful mountain to be savoured on a long hot summers day.

Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park draw a great number of tourists, some of whom venture into the hills to see such staggering views. A holiday in Aviemore certainly gives plenty of choice for those interested in the outdoors.

Moss Campion on Ben Macdui

Moss Campion on Ben Macdui.

A beautiful example of the unique mountain habitat of the Cairngorms plateau. This Moss Campion is growing at over 3000 feet on Ben Macdui.

Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park are a great place for those interested in flora and fauna. The Springwatch programme from the BBC highlighted what a fantastic holiday destination the area is.

Ridge to Braeriach

Ridge to Braeriach.

After leaving the Lairig Ghru path, the ridge to Braeriach presents a steep climb. Once reached it becomes a pleasant ridge walk on the third highest mountain in Scotland.

The Cairngorms National Park offers unlimited walking opportunities in one of the most unique habitats in the country.

Ridge to Ben Macdui

Ridge to Ben Macdui.

If climbing Ben Macdui from the Braemar side, then the Sron Riach ridge from Glen Luibeg is the ideal route. There's a good camping area at Derry lodge which gives a shorter day. If you prefer other types of accommodation then Bob Scotts bothy is available! Failing that there is a wide choice of accommodation in Braemar ranging from hotels to Bed and Breakfast or self catering cottages. Even a Youth Hostel which accepts older youths as well!

Path to Ben Macdui from Ski Centre

Path to Ben Macdui from Ski Centre.

The path up to Ben Macdui from the Ski Centre is a good example of the network of good paths in the area. Once you stray from the immediate vicinity though you're in a hostile environment and must be prepared for any weather that Scotland can throw at you.
Aviemore and the Cairngorms are an ideal location for a holiday for anyone interested in the outdoors. The choice of activities is amazing and accommodation plentiful. We usually go for self catering where there is a fantastic range of cottages and lodges, but there is also a thriving Bed and breakfast and Hotel trade. Whichever you choose you'll have a great holiday in Aviemore.

Meall a Bhuachaille

Meall a Bhuachaille.

Meall a Bhuachaille sits proudly above Glenmore in the Cairngorms National Park.

It is a delightful walk neglected by the munro baggers for it's lack of height! It is a humble corbett ( Scottish Hill between 2500 and 3000 feet ) but provides outstanding views of the Cairngorms and the Rothiemurchus forest.

A circular route starts at Glenmore and heads for Ryvoan Bothy past the green lochan, An Lochan Uaine. Ryvoan isn't exactly a luxury cottage but it does provide self catering accommodation on the cheap!

Head west from the bothy on steep slopes on a good path and you will soon reach the summit. After taking in the views drop down west to a col before descending south down a path through the forest back to Glenmore. A superb half days walk.

Lurchers Crag and Aviemore

Lurchers Crag and Aviemore.

On the way to Ben Macdui it's good to look back and see Aviemore in the distance. I could swear that I could just make out our luxury cottage!

Looking back over Loch Morlich

Looking back over Loch Morlich.

Stopping for a picnic whilst walking in the Cairngorms National Park.

Loch Morlich is certainly a jewel in the crown of the Aviemore area. The camp site next to the Loch is first class accommodation, even if it's self catering!

Lochan Uaine from Sron Riach

Lochan Uaine from Sron Riach.

One of the many 'green lochans' in the Cairngorms, this one is to the South East of the summit of Ben Macdui. Taken from the Sron Riach ridge it looks very inviting. An ideal place for a camping site perhaps.

Lochan Buidhe

Lochan Buidhe.

Lochan Bhuidhe on the approach to Ben Macdui in the Cairngorms. The Lochan feeds the burn, Feith Buidhe which falls over the shelter stone crags before reaching Loch Avon.

You can bed down for the night at the famous shelter stone, but luxury accommodation it is not. Still I can't think of a better place to have my breakfast!

From Sron Riach Ben Macdui

From Sron Riach Ben Macdui.

The superb ridge heading from Sron Riach to Ben Macdui in the Cairngorms.

Fiacaill Ridge

Fiacaill Ridge.

The Fiacaill Ridge on Cairngorm is a delightful scramble, but not for those with a fear of heights!

Direction Indicator Ben macdui

Direction Indicator Ben macdui.

The fantastic direction indicator at the summit of Ben macdui in the Cairngorms National Park. You will need a very clear day to see some of the hills mentioned on it!

Derry Cairngorm from Ben Macdui

Derry Cairngorm from Ben Macdui.

Another cracking hill in the Cairngorms, Derry Cairngorm is usually climbed from Derry Lodge to the South. It can be combined with Ben Macdui and Carn a Mhaim for a spectacular high level traverse.

Coire an Lochain

Coire an Lochain.

Coire an Lochain on Cairngorm Mountain. Two small lochans nestle in the coire with the cliffs towering over them. An ideal spot for a picnic.

Carn a Mhaim from Ben Macdui

Carn a Mhaim from Ben Macdui.

The munro of Carn a Mhaim taken from Ben Macdui. The two hills can be combined for a splendid ridge walk in the Cairngorms.

Cairn Toul from Sron Riach

Cairn Toul from Sron Riach.

The majestic Cairn Toul in the Cairngorms National Park.

Cairn Toul and the Angels Peak

Cairn Toul and the Angels Peak.

Superb ridge walking to be had in the Cairngorms National Park. Cairn Toul and the Angels Peak are two of the best!
