From the peak of Scotlands second highest mountain Ben Macdui the stunning landscape of the Cairngorm National Park can be fully appreciated. Reaching there from the Cairngorm Ski Centre, passing over the top of Cairngorm Mountain, makes for a challenging and inspiring day out for visitors to the Scottish Highlands.

The original Victorian Station Buildings at Spean Bridge have been converted into a lovely restaurant. Although still a stop on the line from Glasgow to Fort William and the line to Malaig, a gateway to the Western Isles, the are no railway facilities.

We had a great trip to Raasay, 4 days hiking and camping. This was our bonfire at midnight on the beach at the summer solstice. We collected muscles at low tide and baked them, fantastic Scottish Sea Food, fresh and at it's best. Wild camping and wild food.

A wild, stormy night but we celebrated the summer solstice on a beach on the Isle of Raasay with a big bonfire and baked muscles straight from the sea. Scottish Sea Food at it's freshest and best.

This guy was out looking for snow in the Cairngorms last weekend when it was hot, hot, hot! His moves were really a bit wooden, obviously hadn't done his warm up and the only snow was in patches up on the tops.

Bothies can be found right across the Scottish Highlands. They are simple dwellings which are open for walkers to use in their travels through the wild places. The idea is that you can use the bothy, usually for free, but you should leave it "better" than you find it, clean and maybe with a little something for the next guests.

A Rubbing Tree on Atholl Estate above the Falls of Bruar Perthshire Scotland This is what Red Deer do.

The Red Deer come down off the open mountains to the edge of the forest and use the Scots Pines as "rubbing posts" to remove parasites. This kills the tree, all the bark for the first four feet up the tree is removed. You can see the trampled ground around the tree.
